Mastering Support & Resistance
Think of support & resistance (S&R) as the market’s invisible floor and ceiling. Price keeps bumping its head on one, or finding comfy slippers on the other-until, of course, it doesn’t. 🪄
What is Support?
A price zone where buying interest consistently shows up, causing down-moves to pause or reverse. It’s like a trampoline-price hits it and often bounces.
What is Resistance?
A zone where selling pressure outweighs buyers, capping price advances. Picture an attic ceiling-once price hits it, it often drifts lower (at least temporarily).
4 Common Types of S&R
- Horizontal Levels: Evident swing highs / lows-clean and easy to spot.
- Trendline / Dynamic: Rising or falling lines connecting multiple swing points.
- Moving Averages: Popular EMAs (e.g., 50-EMA) often act as “dynamic” S&R in trends.
- Pivots & Round Numbers: Psychological levels like 1.3000 on GBP/USD or weekly pivots.
1 . Zoom Out
Switch to a higher timeframe (4H, Daily). Big picture first, sniper entries later.
2 . Connect the Dots
Mark areas where price touched at least twice and reacted. The more touches, the stronger the level.
3 . Think Zones, Not Lines
Treat S&R as regions a few pips wide. Market makers love stop-hunts right beyond a thin line.
3 Ways to Trade S&R
-
Bounce Setup
Wait for price to respect the zone (wick rejection, engulfing candle) and trade back into range. -
Break-&-Retest
After a clean breakout, look for price to revisit the old level (now flipped) before continuing. -
False Break / Stop-Hunt
Spotting a quick spike through S&R followed by a sharp reversal? That’s liquidity grabbing- hop on the snap-back move.
🤦♂️ Common Pitfalls
- Forcing lines on every swing-keep charts uncluttered.
- Entering on first touch without confirmation.
- Ignoring higher-timeframe context.
💡 Pro Tips
- Combine S&R with oscillator divergence or candlestick patterns for higher accuracy.
- Journal every touch, bounce or breach in Tracom-patterns emerge over time.
- During high-impact news, S&R can turn into a revolving door-tighten risk!
